Virologist (Cell Culture Specialist)

Element has and opportunity for an Associate Virologist cell culture specialist to work in a fast-paced environment supporting laboratory-based studies evaluating antimicrobial products.  The Associate Virologist specializing in Cell Culture and Lab Support (a) performs cell culture maintenance; (b) responsible for media production for the cell culture and virology laboratories; (c) assists with lab support activities as assigned by supervisor to support virucidal efficacy testing; and (d) assists with and designs research and development (R&D) projects when implementing new methods or adapting current methods.



  • Performs maintenance of mammalian cell cultures
  • Responsible for propagating cell cultures in flasks and plates for use in the virology laboratory
  • Responsible for making media for the cell culture and virology laboratories
  • Assists with virus propagation and titering using aseptic technique
  • Responsible for generating and maintaining strict documentation of raw data to ensure a high level of scientific integrity in accordance with regulatory requirements
  • Performs general and supplemental laboratory duties when requested by the lab manager or Lead Virologist
  • Responsible for the monitoring, cleaning and decontaminating of laboratory equipment on a routine basis
  • Responsible for ensuring equipment is operating correctly each day (i.e. monitoring temperatures)
  • Assists with the review of paperwork generated by the virology laboratory as necessary
  • Assists with developing and refining new and existing Standard Operating Procedures and forms
  • Provides information to supervisors and co-workers by telephone, in written form, e-mail, or in person
  • Responsible for communicating laboratory issues and trends to the lab manager and to peers when these issues are discovered
  • Responsible for assisting with the completion of all daily laboratory tasks scheduled directly or indirectly to the employee
  • Assist the Lead Virologist and/or laboratory manager in developing or training new or existing laboratory employees with regards to cell culture responsibilities
  • Performs testing and lab support in other laboratories as needed (microbiology, chemistry, medical device, media, etc.)

Skills / Qualifications

  • Minimum BS/BA in microbiology, biology or related field
  • Preferred 1-2 years applicable experience in a laboratory environment
  • Able to become current and stay current with EPA and FDA Good Laboratory Practice Regulations (40 CFR Part 160 and 21 CFR Part 58)
  • Able to understand published methodology to adapt existing test methods, develop new test methods and ensure accuracy
  • Knowledge of the principles of classical microbiology, including virology, cell culture maintenance and microscopy.
  • Knowledge of general analytical procedures including chemical titrations
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment apparatus and terminology
  • Ability to make complex mathematical computations, use statistical techniques in the treatment of data, and interpret and apply findings
  • Work as an effective and proactive team-player; understands the importance of supporting the organization, customers and other Analytical Lab Group employees
  • Ability to accurately maintain records
  • Able to give full attention to what other people say, take time to understand the points being made, and ask questions as appropriate
  • Able to use critical thinking, logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  • Able to communicate effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience
