Failure Analysis Manager

Element has an opportunity for a Failure Analysis Manager for our Consulting services. In this role you will be a member of the operational leadership team reporting to the Operations Manager and perform a variety of leadership responsibilities within the department to insure timely and accurate test results are delivered.



All Operational Leadership positions must be proficient in a number of core business skills including but not limited to compliance to established safety rules, code of conduct, and company policies and procedures



The primary function of the Failure Analysis Manager is to safely perform engineering evaluations and failure analysis on components from the aerospace, medical, transportation, and energy industries. Work is to be performed in accordance with established QA procedures and standard testing and client specifications. Candidates will perform the role of advisor and consultant to Element Clients in regards to metallurgical analysis, testing requests and other technical support.


This candidate will participate in departmental budgetary planning, and report financial activities to senior management, and oversight of test method and laboratory capability development aligned with departmental growth objectives. The candidate will provide quarterly departmental assessments to senior management, and annually provide a departmental overview during the management review meetings.

  • Meet with clients to determine their requirements; develop proposals for larger projects, including cost estimates, project plan, and terms and conditions
  • Responsible for personnel management of assigned staff including hiring, training, and assignments, performance evaluations, salary administration, discipline, and employee morale
  • Responsible for project management including staff assignments, equipment allocations, schedules, and costs
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the annual budget of the department
  • Schedule tests, analyze test results, and prepare high-quality professional reports
  • Perform root cause failure analysis investigations, which includes the following laboratory activities:
    • Forensic documentation and sample measurements
    • Metallurgical examinations / optical microscopy
    • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)
    • Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)
  • Safely operate and maintain lab equipment in compliance with company requirements
  • Establish and maintain client contact for the purposes of market/account development, understanding customers’ needs, building personal relationships, ensuring satisfaction, and maintaining a professional consulting image
  • Provide consultation to both internal and external clients regarding materials performance

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years' experience in failure analysis.
  • Experience in managing complex business relationships, both internal and external, where conflicting priorities of team members must be managed with customer satisfaction, safety, and quality are primary goal
  • Strong technical background involving metals or non-metals  testing evaluation in a captive or commercial laboratory environment.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety with extensive knowledge of the current suite of testing capabilities.
  • Ability to read and interpret test specifications, drawings, test plans and/or blueprints.
  • Organizational, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to effectively establish and maintain two-way communications to understand the needs and concerns
  • Technical leadership is vital to the production and operation of assigned tests with advanced working knowledge to operate various testing equipment.
  • Availability, flexibility, and maturity to represent the company at a broad range of events/projects in the community, with customers and within the company.
  • Ability to interface with clients, win new work and determine their requirements; helps develop proposals including cost estimates, work plans and terms and conditions.
