Metallurgical Prep Technician

Element has an opportunity for a  Metallurgical Prep Technician to safely and accurately perform metallurgical sample preparations, such that subsequent testing and evaluations can be conducted in accordance with applicable standards, specifications and customers’ PO (purchase order) 


  • Prepares test specimens, sets up and adjusts sample prep equipment, and records / reports test data
  • Performs metallurgical testing and documents relevant data & results
  • Provides guidance and training to others on the metallurgical / mechanical team as required
  • Works with other staff to meet work and testing obligations to satisfy customer needs
  • Maintains & calibrates relevant equipment, tools, & machinery to ensure good working condition
  • Assists Lab Manager with production, quality, and process improvements  
  • Ensures all work is performed in accordance with company safety & quality procedures, customer purchase orders, specifications, and in accordance with regulatory agencies’ mandates
  • Serves as an active participant for our team’s usage of tools such as TPM, 5S, SQDC, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Lab Manager

Skills / Qualifications

  • Metallurgical Sample Preparation in accordance with ASTM E3
  • Etching of Metals (e.g. ASTM E407)
  • Metallography & Microstructural Examination and Documentation
  • Macro-Etching, Evaluation, Interpretation, and Documentation
  • Digital Macro Photography & Micro Photomicroscopy
  • Microhardness Testing (e.g. ASTM E384)
  • Hardness Testing (e.g. ASTM E10 & E18)
  • Other relevant metallurgical practices
  • High-School graduate (or equivalent) is required minimum
  • Associate or Bachelor Degree in Metallurgy or Material Science is preferable
  • Work experience in metallurgical testing and/or metal machining is desired
  • Experience in interpreting Customer Testing Procedures, Specifications, and Requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (e.g. Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Exhibits knowledge of common testing standards, quality, and data systems.
    Ability to remain calm when faced with mounting pressure related to deadlines and multiple priorities. 
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills to meet a variety of communication needs. Good interpersonal skills that foster open upward and downward communication built on mutual respect. 
  • Motivated, proactive individual with good interpersonal skills. Ability to work with individuals and customers at all levels and from a variety of locations
