Quality Manager

Element has an opportunity for an experienced Quality Manager who will be reporting directly to the Business Unit Quality Manager, North American Transportation and Industrials (T&I) and indirectly to the laboratory General Manager, you are an essential member of the management team and responsible for the overall quality performance. This includes the Element quality management system (QMS), improving First Time Right, maintaining and developing relationships with customers, and improving processes. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 requirements in relation to materials testing. Experience in Safety, Health, and Environmental a plus!

In this role, you will have interaction with clients, Accreditation Bodies, and will be responsible for advising operational colleagues of the importance of quality, accuracy and integrity in the provision of the inspection and testing services we provide.



You will be involved in leading quality at a local level and will work closely with the  Business Unit Quality Manager, North American T&I to ensure that Element quality policies, processes and procedures are effectively implemented in New Berlin. As a quality leader within Element you will be capable of driving a culture of quality assurance and quality improvement, working closely with your operational colleagues and the wider Element quality community. The Quality Manager is responsible for ensuring production and reporting of reliable data, and therefore has authority and organizational freedom to stop work in progress, stop test report shipments, change test and preparation procedures, update test and preparation methods, audit department performance, and institute corrective actions.


  • Provide leadership and a clear understanding of quality standards in developing and maintaining a quality system that meets the requirement of ISO 17025 and the Element location Quality Manual
  • Implement and maintain the laboratory quality system, reporting on the performance of the quality system for review and as a basis for improvement of the system
  • Act as liaison with customers, vendors, and staff to answer inquiries, concerns, and complaints
  • In conjunction with staff, write, review and/or approve test procedures, training documents, position responsibilities, and calibration and maintenance of equipment in accordance with industry standards, customer requirements, and Element Corporate System Procedures
  • Administer all functions of the quality system, including but not limited to, audits, calibrations, corrective actions, the selection of test equipment, employee qualification, complaints, and document control
  • Communicate audit results, quality metrics, quality system deficiencies, or concerns regarding the quality of data to the location management and Business Unit Quality Manager, North American T&I
  • Prepare and respond to customer and accreditation bodies including coordination and implementation of corrective and preventive actions
  • Partner with laboratory supervision to meet customers’ expectations while maintaining the necessary independence to assure data integrity
  • Perform method audits of all procedures for testing, preparation,and calibration according to the frequency established, as well as, train and qualify others in the organization to assist with method audits
  • Motivate and maintain a positive attitude toward the quality system by recognizing and rewarding quality performance
  • In conjunction with department managers, ensure proper training and qualification occurs, at the frequency required by industry standards, internal procedures, customer requirements, and Element Corporate System Procedures
  • Initiate, lead and support process improvement activities across the laboratory

Skills / Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in a scientific, engineering, or business management discipline, with ideally 5 years’ experience in quality within the field of materials testing or a related environment (e.g. manufacturing)
  • Experience of working in an ISO 17025 (or equivalent) environment is preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years experience in the development and implementation of ISO 17025 accredited quality systems at a management level; or extensive experience functioning under ISO 17025 or ISO 9001 accredited systems in a technical or quality-related capacity
  • Strong technical background involving metals testing evaluation in a captive or commercial laboratory environment is preferred
  • Recognition by the American Society for Quality (ASQ) as one or more of the following professional attainments would be preferred in this job:
    • Certified Quality Auditor (CQA)
    • Certified Quality Engineer (CQE)
    • Certified Quality Manager (CQM)
  • Effective organizational and time management skills with the ability prioritize activities
  • Good communication skills, with a confident, professional approach and an ability to interact with customers, management, and operational colleagues on quality related issues
  •  Experience in participating in quality investigations, undertaking root cause analysis, developing corrective action plans, and ensuring the effectiveness of actions undertaken
  • Requirement to keep up to date with changes in the quality landscape and maintain personal professional development
  • Ability to identify quality problems and work with colleagues to determine effective and sustainable solutions
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues and work effectively as part of a team
  • Ability to work autonomously, with minimal supervision
  • Computer Literacy: ability to work in customer and accreditation portals, eQMS, Outlook, etc. Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Safety, Health, and Environmental skills a plus
