Overview

Element has an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented and technically minded Associate Mechanical/Materials Test Technician to support fatigue testing of materials using load-controlled or strain-controlled methods. This role is ideal for candidates with a background in science, math, and physics who are interested in hands-on work with mechanical testing systems and materials behavior analysis. The technician will be responsible for preparing samples, setting up and operating test frames, conducting tests under various temperature conditions, and accurately documenting procedures and results.

 

Salary: $22 – 25/hour (Depending on Experience) + $1.00 Differential

Shift: Tuesday to Saturday, 6 – 2:30pm or Sunday to Wednesday, 6 – 2:30pm

 

Preferred shift: Wednesday to Sunday, 6 – 2:30pm, + $3.00 Differential

 

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and mount test specimens in fatigue test frames according to engineering instructions and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Program test frames via computer software using test worksheets detailing sample specifications, load/strain parameters, and testing conditions.
  • Perform fatigue tests in room temperature, elevated temperature, or cryogenic environments, based on the test plan.
  • Monitor tests and adjust parameters as needed to maintain consistent and accurate testing conditions.
  • Record all test setup details, procedures, and observations in a standardized worksheet to ensure repeatability and traceability.
  • Inspect and measure specimens before and after testing to evaluate material behavior.
  • Collaborate with engineers and other lab personnel to evaluate and verify test outcomes.
  • Maintain lab cleanliness and safety practices in compliance with internal standards.

Skills / Qualifications

    • HS Diploma or GED. Associate degree in Science, Math, Physics, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred,
    • Experience in a materials testing laboratory or mechanical testing environment preferred.
    • Ability to follow SOPs and work instructions with high attention to detail.
    • Basic understanding of mechanical properties, load/strain relationships, and fatigue behavior.
    • Proficiency with computers and test frame software interfaces is a plus.
    • Comfortable working in environments involving extreme temperatures (e.g., cryogenic and high heat).
    • Strong written communication skills for documentation and reporting.

     

    Work Environment:

    • Laboratory-based with exposure to mechanical test equipment and temperature-controlled test chambers.
    • May involve standing for extended periods and handling tools or materials.
    • Use of safety gear (PPE) is required during specific testing operations.
    • Occasional lifting of materials and test fixtures (typically <50 lbs).
    • Collaborative team environment with opportunities for skill development and cross-training.
