Overview

Element has an opportunity for an Organics Department Supervisor at our Fort Wayne, IN location. The Organics Department Supervisor is the subject matter expert on all organics analyses, guides the technical staff in timely completion of daily work, works with teams to optimize and develop new methods, and may be designated as the main contact for customer on-site visits. The supervisor is also a key member of the department's safety team and provides awareness around safety first. You will be relied upon heavily by other colleagues such as Technicians, Chemists, Projects Managers, Quality Coordinator, Operations Manager, General Manager and other positions.

 

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for organizing and directing the daily activities of the Organics Department including Preparation and Extraction, Volatiles, Semi-Volatiles, PCBs, Pesticides, and PFAS analysis
  • Responsible for supervising organics laboratory personnel. Play an active role in recruiting, hiring, training and people development within the department
  • Monitor backlogs in LIMS to meet method holding times as well as client project TAT requirements
  • Mange workflow and communicate work status and laboratory capabilities to project management and laboratory management
  • Review analytical data for accuracy and completeness
  • Responsible for troubleshooting analytical instrumentation and analytical processes. Oversee equipment maintenance within the department
  • Act as primary technical expert for the organics department. Set up new equipment and provide method development as required to support growth
  • Develop, review and revise standard operating procedures for the Organics department
  • Serve as a backup for staff within the department
  • Work closely with the quality coordinator to ensure the organics department produces well rounded, litigation quality data that is in line with Element’s SOPs, Quality Service Manual, and accreditations
  • Prepare and deliver performance reviews, development plans and performance improvement plans for staff
  • Order supplies for the Organics Department
  • Offer recommendations for new equipment/procedures to increase productivity and efficiency within the department
  • Demonstrates and promotes the company vision

Skills / Qualifications

  • BS or BA in chemistry or related science field with at least one year of supervisory experience preferred. 5+ years supervisory experience in the Testing, Inspection and Certification (TIC) industry may substitute for a degree
  • Working knowledge of laboratory quality and safety
  • Strong computer skills and basic mathematical skills with the ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry a plus
  • Demonstrate excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to lift <50 lbs. often and >50 lbs. on occasion as well as stand on feet for long periods of time
  • Experience with LIMS data entry and data review
  • Ability to work primarily alone and make independent decisions throughout the workday
  • Ability to communicate and demonstrate the importance of meeting all applicable requirements of assigned department
  • Proven ability to read, understand and interpret program or test requirements and have ability to analyses and translate into finished testing or report data
  • Excellent communication skills and telephone etiquette
  • Proficient skills in word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Proven and recognized ability to provide accurate and timely status reports to internal and external customers
  • Ability to track multiple testing jobs / programs from start to finish and assist with contract review of job status daily, including follow-up emails and phone calls daily to and from internal and external customers
