  • Overview

    Element has an opportunity for an Failure Analysis Department Manager who will be primarily responsible for safely performing failure analysis and engineering evaluations for client projects through root cause failure analysis investigations on metallic components from the aerospace, transportation, and oil & gas industries.  


    • Supervise staff of engineers, technicians and office support that are responsible for day to day tasks
    • Meet with clients to determine their requirements; develop proposals for larger projects, including cost estimates, project plan, and terms and conditions
    • Responsible for personnel management of assigned staff including hiring, training, and assignments, performance evaluations, salary administration, discipline, and employee morale
    • Responsible for project management including staff assignments, equipment allocations, schedules, and costs
    • Responsible for the development and implementation of the annual budget of the department 
    • Schedule tests, analyze test results and prepare high-quality professional reports
    • Perform root cause failure analysis investigations on metallic components primarily from the oil & gas industries, and also including manufacturing, construction, transportation, and aerospace, which includes the following laboratory activities:
      • Forensic documentation and sample measurements
      • Metallurgical examinations / optical microscopy
      • Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)
    • Safely operate and maintain lab equipment in compliance with company requirements
    • Establish and maintain client contact for the purposes of market / account development, understanding customers’ needs, building personal relationships, ensuring satisfaction, and maintaining a professional consulting image
    • Provide consultation to both internal and external clients regarding materials performance

    Skills / Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
    • Minimum of 3 year’s experience in failure analysis, preferably in the oil / gas or aerospace industries
    • 5-7 years of management or supervisory experience
    • Experience in managing complex business relationships, both internal and external, where conflicting priorities of team members must be managed with customer satisfaction, safety and quality are primary goal
    • Strong technical background involving metals testing evaluation in a captive or commercial laboratory environment
    • Mechanical aptitude related to service conditions of industrial components
    • Knowledge of corrosion mechanisms in industry
    • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Proven leadership skills
    • Experience in interpreting testing procedures and requirements
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Applications (Word, Excel)


    This position requires access to export-controlled commodities, technical data, technology, software, and services. U.S. citizenship, U.S. legal permanent resident status, protected person status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3), or U.S. Government export authorization is required.
